A classification for materials that can be made soft by the application of heat and harden on cooling.
Etymology: Gk, thermē, heat + plassein, to mold
softening under heat and capable of being molded into shape with pressure, then hardening on cooling without undergoing chemical change.
thermoplasticwidely adaptable heat-mouldable and reusable orthotic and splinting materials; some (e.g. light-density Plastazote) can be moulded directly to the foot; others (e.g. Vitrathene) must be moulded to a cast (their plasticity temperature causes skin burns); some are suitable for chairside use (e.g. Hexcelite; Aquaplast) as they soften (when immersed in water at 65-70°C or warmed with a hair dryer for approximately 1 minute) and remain mouldable for 3-5 minutes (see Table 1)
|Material||Moulding temperature (°C)||Heating time (minutes)|
|TL61 carbon fibre||180||20|
Note: Heating times will need to be adjusted up or down for thicker or thinner materials.

adj the property of becoming soft with the application of heat, rigid at normal temperature, and again soft with the reapplication of heat. A reversible physical phenomenon.
