together with camels, the South American camelids form the suborder Tylopoda. There are four species, the llama (Lama glama), the guanaco (L. huanacos, syn. L. guanicoe), the vicuña (L. vicugna, syn. Vicugna vicugna), and the alpaca (L. pacos). They are all long-legged, long-necked animals, like camels without humps. The alpaca is used for its wool, the others are used as pack animals.
