A perennial herb that contains coumarins (e.g., bergapten, coumarin, umbelliferone), isovaleric acid, volatile oils (e.g., phthalides, pinene, terpinene, terpineol) and resin; it is carminative, diaphoretic and sedative, and has been used as a digestive tonic and to relieve menstrual cramping.
