Spirochaete

An invalid taxonomic bacterial genus name [Bergey’s]; not in current use as a genus. The correct spelling of the genus is Spirochaeta.

spirochaete

A class of fine, spiral, highly motile bacteria. The three medically most important genera are the Treponema which includes the causal agent of syphilis T. pallidum ; the Leptospira , which includes L. icterohaemorrhagiae , the cause of leptospirosis; and the Borrelia , which include the cause of relapsing fever, B. recurrentis , and of Lyme disease, B. burgdorferi .
