LAV

Lymphadenopathy-associated virus. This was the name first given to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) when it was discovered in the Pasteur Institute in Paris, by researchers Francoise Barré-Sinoussi, C. Cherman and F Rey, working under Luc Montagnier. The same virus was called HTLV-III (human T cell lymphotropic virus, Type III) by workers under Robert Gallo when it was isolated in the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland.
