Klaus Barbie

A captain of the Gestapo known as the ‘Butcher of Lyon’ who is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of 4,000 Jews and French resistance fighters in World War II. Like many Nazis, Barbie (1913-1991) fled to South America.

Based on an anecdote from the I 970s told to Joskowicz by a relative, as well as on her own memories from childhood, the video stages an encounter in a Bolivian high-rise apartment building between two neighbors: a Polish-Jewish refugee and Barbie, then residing in La Paz under the assumed name Klaus Altmann (spelled Altman in the work).
After the war he fled to Bolivia and lived there under the name Klaus Altmann. He was recruited by the BND -- West Germany's foreign intelligence agency -- in 1965, and was employed by it until the winter of 1966/67.
