Vox populi ‘The Man of Steel’ A comic book superhero who first appeared in the 1930s in DC Comics, and is arguably the best-known American cultural icon. Sightings of him on the street in the 1950s carried the tagline, 'It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman!' He possesses extraordinary powers, traditionally described as 'faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound'.
