(koy'ning)1. A traditional health practice in which a heated coin is placed or rubbed on the skin (to treat conditions such as asthma). A health care provider who is unaware of this practice could erroneously attribute the lesions caused by coining to physical abuse. Synonym: cao gio
2. In biomedical engineering, a cold-working process used to improve the strength of metals used for biological purposes (e.g., nails used in orthopedic surgeries).
