SETD7A gene on chromosome 4q28 that encodes a SET domain-containing histone-lysine methyltransferase that specifically monomethylates Lys-4 of histone H3, providing a specific tag for epigenetic transcriptional activation. SETD7 pays a central role in the transcriptional activation of genes encoding collagenase, insulin and other proteins; it also has methyltransferase activity toward non-histone proteins, such as p53/TP53, TAF10 and possibly TAF7. SETD7 is widely expressed, especially in pancreatic islets. It interacts with IPF1/PDX-1.
