glutamate receptor

Any of a family of heteromeric protein complexes that are the primary excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the brain, which are activated by various neurophysiologic stimuli. Glutamate receptors are comprised of multiple subunits, each with transmembrane regions, and form a ligand-gated ion channel. They are classified based on their activation by different pharmacologic agonists.
