The oil had 0.387+-0.043, 2.907+-0.197, 118.8+-2.997 and 188.83+-1.678 acid value, peroxide value, iodine value and saponification value, respectively.
General physical and chemical properties were evaluated that included density (by pycnometer) using the standard IUPAC method 2.101, kinematic viscosity following ASTM method D445, while iodine value (Wij's method), refractive index (Abbe's refractometer), free fatty acid content (FFA %) and saponification number were determined following standard AOCS methods Cd 1-25, Cc 7-25, Ca 5a-40 and Cd 3-25, respectively.
* Compared with the iodine-adequate group, median urinary iodine value was significantly higher in the iodine-sufficient group (Z = -8.291, p < 0.001).
Physicochemical properties such as moisture, color, freezing point AdegC, smoke point AdegC, refractive index (40AdegC), free fatty acids (FFA), saponification value, iodine value, peroxide value and fatty acids composition of industrially processed cottonseed oils were measured according to the American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) methods [9]..
On the other hand, the iodine value calculated as an average for six accessions (125.3 g iodine per 100 g, Table 4) in the present study was higher than the corresponding values reported by other investigators, whieh were 78.7 g iodine per 100 g for Nigerian fruits (Manji et al., 2013) and 96.0-106.0 g iodine per 100 g for Indian fruits (Arora and Tak, 2013).
The surface tension (2.33), viscosity (7.0 at 21[degrees]C) kinematic viscosity (38.32) lower acid value (1.3 mg of KOH/g), the high saponification value (190.7 mg of KOH/g) and iodine value (105.5 g of I2/100 g) indicated the potential uses of the oil in diet and industries.
The different blends of PS/HOSO were analyzed in terms of color (Lovibond red) (method, Cc 13e-92), refractive index (method Cc 7-25), capillary melting point (method Cc-1-25), relative density (method Cc 10a-25), acidity (method Ca 5a-40), peroxide value (method Cd 8-53), moisture and volatile matter (method Ca 2d-25), and iodine value (method Cd 1c- 85) according to official AOCS [30] procedures.
Official methods of the American Oil Chemists' Society were used for the determination of melting point (method Cc 1-25), refractive index (method Cc 7-25), iodine value (method Cd 1-25), peroxide value (method Cd 8-53), p-anisidine value (Cd 18-90), acid value (method Ca 3a-63), and saponification value (method Cd 3-25) [13].
According to the Chinese standards that define water iodine value less than 10g/L as iodine-deficient district, and according to an Indian study where iodine content of drinking water in goitrous areas ranged from 3-16g/L as compared to 5-64g/L in non-goitrous areas, iodine content in Saudi water is still found low.18,31 The iodine deficiency in an area is mainly judged from iodine content of soil, level of iodine in drinking water and iodine content of food grown in that soil.33
Cardanol was subjected to extensive analysis for the determination of iodine value, viscosity, and specific gravity as per the procedures mentioned in IS-Standard 840-1964 (refer to Table 1).
Analyses of the chemical properties are content of free fatty acid (% FFA), saponification value, and iodine value. Procedures of free fatty acids (% FFA) were based on the AOCS method Ca 5a-40, saponification value was based on AOCS method Cd 3-25, and value iodine was based on Wijs method.
