The authorship criteria of the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) are widely accepted in medical and biomedical journals, but many studies in the prestigious journals show that adherence to the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations for medical journals is low and a considerable proportion of authors do not fulfil these criteria.
Note compliance with institutional review board requirements and, when appropriate, approved laboratory procedures for animal research, and thatthe research conforms to the ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki, the Geneva Declaration, the Belmont Report, and Good Clinical Practices from the FDA, and the submission conforms to the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication" (www.ICMJE.org).
The World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE), among others, have been very pro-active in formulating guidelines.
The 1981
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines require authors to confirm that their research has been reviewed by an independent ERC.
Finally, the new standards call for drug makers to adopt the authorship standards of the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. The committee says, for instance, that only individuals who make substantial contributions to a manuscript should be included as authors.
The
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (6) specifically states that electronic publication constitutes prior publication but is unclear about different forms of electronic publishing.
To curtail this type of selective reporting, the eleven members of the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which includes JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, and The Lancet, adopted a requirement that any research article submitted to their journals must be registered in a public registry.
