IL9A gene on chromosome 5q31.1 that encodes interleukin-9, a cytokine which regulates various haematopoietic cells, stimulating cell proliferation and preventing apoptosis. IL9 acts via interleukin 9 receptor (IL9R), which activates different signal transducer and activator (STAT) proteins, linking it to various biological processes.
IL9 is a candidate gene for asthma.
