ilium

(il'e-um) plural.ilia [L. ile, ileum, ilium, pl. ilia, area of the abdomen from the lowest rib to the pubes; flank, groin]
1. One of the bones of each half of the pelvis. It is the superior and widest part and serves to support the flank. In the child, before fusion with adjacent pelvic bones, it is a separate bone. Synonym: os ilium
2. The flank. See: sacroiliac
