INHBB

A gene on chromosome 2cen-q13 that encodes the inhibin-beta B subunit, which binds to the alpha subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor and which has a dual role as a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone. Like activins, inhibins are involved in regulating diverse functions, such as hypothalamic, pituitary and gonadal hormone secretion, as well as germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development, or bone growth, depending on their subunit composition.
