ING1

A gene on chromosome 13q34 that encodes a nuclear protein and putative tumour suppressor which induces cell growth arrest and apoptosis. It interacts with the tumour suppressor protein TP53 and is a component of the p53 signalling pathway. ING1 expression in normal and malignant tissues differs according to the isoform.

Molecular pathology
Defects of ING1 have been linked to an increased susceptibility to squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

After earlier research had indicated that a related protein, ING1, has antitumor properties, scientists became interested in other members of the ING family.
