INS
A gene on chromosome 11p15.5 that encodes preproinsulin, which is cleaved post-translationally into the B- and A-chain peptides (which are covalently linked via two disulfide bonds to form insulin) and C-peptide. Insulin reduces blood glucose and increases cell permeability to monosaccharides, amino acids and fatty acids, and accelerates glycolysis, the pentose phosphate cycle and glycogen synthesis in the liver.Segen's Medical Dictionary. © 2012 Farlex, Inc.
