Howie Report

Howie Report

A report on postmortem practices that was prematurely leaked in a trades union journal and never in fact published by the UK Department of Health as originally intended. JW Howie and CH Collins published a letter to the effect in the British Medical Journal 1980; 280:1071, that the phrase Howie Report is not synonymous with the Howie Code (and is best deleted from the literature).

The thinking behind the rejection of the Howie Report's suggestions reveals something of the way in which the characteristics of the Scottish education system (compared with what happens in the rest of the UK) have become aspects of national identity with all the burdens of status which follow from that.
