a subclass of the CHONDRICHTHYES, including fish having a compressed head and flattened teeth for crushing molluscs; the only present-day representative is CHIMAERA (2).

The closest genomes to those of elasmobranch sharks are those of a member of the chondrichthyian Holocephali, the chimaera elephant shark, or ghost shark (Callorhinchus milii Bory de Saint-Vincent, 1823).
