Hershey, Alfred

Hershey, Alfred

(1908–97) American scientist who in 1951 with his colleague Martha Chase showed, by means of differential radioactive labelling, that the DNA of T2 BACTERIOPHAGES (rather than their protein) was necessary for the formation of new phages within the host bacterium, E. coli. The experimental results are taken as a demonstration that DNA functions as the genetic material.
