The relative abundances of photoautotrophic bacteria (e.g., purple sulfur bacteria and green nonsulfur bacteria) and chemolithotrophic sulfide-oxidizing bacteria can be affected by the amount of light that reaches the chemocline (Jorgensen and Des Marais, 1986).
Preliminary findings are similar to those seen with the greenhouse mat, again, with a 3:1 proportion of green nonsulfur bacteria to cyanobacteria.
