GPC1

A gene on chromosome 2q35-q37 that encodes glypican 1, a cell surface proteoglycan with heparan sulfate that contains a core protein anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI) bond. The GPC family plays a role in controlling cell division and growth regulation.

Molecular pathology
Defects in processing glypican 1 occur in fibroblasts of patients with Niemann-Pick Type C1 disease.
