Lewis, Gilbert Newton
U.S. physical chemist, 1875–1946. He discovered the covalent bond and was the first to produce pure heavy water (deuterium oxide).
Lewis acid
A substance that accepts an electron pair from a base, forming a covalent bond with the base.
Lewis base
A substance that donates an electron pair to an acid, forming a covalent bond with the acid.
