genetic counselling

The process of trying to determine, for the purpose of advising prospective parents, the probability that a future child will suffer from a particular genetic disorder known to occur in the family. Genetic counsellors must have a detailed knowledge of the principles of genetics and of the nature of the conditions caused by gene defect. They must be skilled in constructing family pedigrees and in interpreting them. Counselling is best done in specialized centres where the necessary expertise can be obtained.
