In the present study we examined PA using the global physical activity questionnaire (GPAQ
) and report PA levels and associated social-economic determinants in rural and urban Tanzania.
In addition, the quantification of PA was based on GPAQ
, which has been widely used in recent studies in developing countries.
The General Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ
; ) was used to measure the average physical activity undertaken by each participant in a typical week.
Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ
).10 The subjects were asked about the frequency and duration of time spent in vigorous and moderate intensity activities at work/home, recreation and travelling in a typical week.
Physical activity was assessed in a manner similar to the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ

This 11-item measure is an adaptation of the 18-item General Practice Assessment Questionnaire (GPAQ
(Mead, Bower, & Roland, 2008).
The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ
) version 2.0 was used for data collection, and this was accompanied by a show card derived from the World Health Organization STEPwise approach to Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance instrument version 2.0 (WHO STEPs, http://www.who.int/chp/steps/GPAQ/en/index.htm), which provides examples of the types and intensity of PA, with some modifications to suit the Saudi community (GPAQ
, http://www.who.int/chp/steps/GPAQ/en/ index.htm).
