functional neuroimaging

Also found in: Wikipedia.

neuroimaging, functional

Methods used to detect structural abnormalities in the central nervous system and localized brain neural activity in response to performing specific sensory, motor and cognitive tasks. Two common methods are functional MRI (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). These techniques can be used to detect tumours, strokes, focal cerebral lesions, and to map the cortex in healthy individuals. See magnetic resonance imaging; computed tomography; positron emission tomography.

Functional neuroimaging data suggests the mechanism of action of electrical stimulation of branches of the trigeminal nerve, including those located near the surface of the forehead, is related to its ability to modulate activity in targeted brain regions.
Thus, fNIRS is an optimal tool for functional neuroimaging applications in epidemiological studies that take place in remote environments.
Using functional neuroimaging tools, such as SPECT, are essential to developing precision medicine brain treatments in the future.
Both structural and functional neuroimaging studies have revealed a decline in older adults in volume and function of prefrontal brain regions, supporting the decline of executive control.

NEUROMEM will provide mechanistic answers to 3 long-standing questions: 1) What is the link between memory and space, and role of spatial context in re-imagining episodes 2) How are the multiple diverse elements of complex life-like events recollected together 3) How can remembered events be read-out as visuospatial imagery Work will comprise psychological and functional neuroimaging experiments using sophisticated designs including use of virtual reality, and corresponding simulations of how such behaviour can be driven by neuronal activity.
exposure to environmental toxins, family history) due to the retrospective nature of the study, unavailability of functional neuroimaging (DAT-SCAN, SPECT), and the lack of previous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses from the three reported patients.
Interestingly, patients with OCD and phobias who were effectively treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors demonstrated these same changes on functional neuroimaging (Mol Psychiatry.

Over the last 20 years, the anatomy of language has been investigated with functional neuroimaging techniques based on perfusion and metabolism (PET, fMRI), whose results supported more traditional analyses of anatomo-clinical correlations in selected groups of brain-damaged patients, and have more recently been complemented by so-called virtual lesion studies (through Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and evidence of intraoperative direct electrical stimulation.
For the study, the researchers presented participants with a series of pictures and tastes during functional neuroimaging, and then analyzed participants' ratings of their subjective experiences along with their brain activation patterns.
