first responder

First response personnel Emergency medicine A person employed in the public sector–EMT, fire fighter, police, volunteer EMS–whose duties include provision of immediate medical care in the event of an emergency; FRs have basic emergency care equipment, O2 and mask combinations, tools for extrication–eg Excaliber, Jaws of life, and defibrillators. emergency medical responder

(EMR) (ĕ-mĕrgĕn-sē medi-kăl rĕ-spondĕr)
A prehospital care provider with the basic level of training and certification (i.e., fire fighters and law enforcement personnel). Previously known as first responder.

first responder

1. The first individual to arrive at the scene of an emergency. Many communities have made an effort to train public safety personnel (e.g., police and fire department) or other volunteers to respond to trauma and medical emergencies and provide CPR and first aid. See: emergency medical responder
2. The U.S. Department of Transportation training curriculum designed for the first arriving personnel on the scene of a medical emergency or traumatic event. The focus of this training is to assess and manage life-threatening emergencies.
