formaldehyde
[for-mal´dĕ-hīd]a gaseous compound with strongly disinfectant properties. It is used in a 37 per cent solution (formaldehyde solution; also called formol or formalin) as a disinfectant and as a preservative and fixative for pathological specimens. The gas is toxic and carcinogenic.
