FGF5

A gene on chromosome 4q21 that encodes fibroblast growth factor 5 of the FGF family, which bind heparin and have a broad range of cellular activities, including cell survival, division, differentiation and migration, embryonic development, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumour growth and invasion. FGF5 is required for regulating hair growth, inhibiting hair elongation by promoting progression from anagen (the growth phase of the hair follicle) into catagen (the apoptosis-induced regression phase). FGF5 interacts with FGF receptors FGFR1 and -2.
