expressed sequence tag (EST)

a partial GENE sequence, usually from the end of a cDNA clone, that is unique to a gene and that can be used to identify it during GENOME analysis. The partial sequence of the cDNA provides a tag to locate the position of the expressed gene (from which mRNA and hence the cDNA is prepared), even though the identity of the gene itself may not be known. See also SEQUENCE TAGGED SITE.

There, fast, state-of-the-art gene-sequencing instruments will identify up to a half-million switchgrass sequence fragments, called "expressed sequence tags" (ESTs), within the next 3 years.
In the current era of "single nucleotide polymorphisms," "expressed sequence tags," and "functional genomics," it is all too easy to forget that for the majority of this century the organization and even existence of plant genes were inferred from phenotype, not the other way around.

We report here on our strategy to develop polymorphic markers using expressed sequence tags (ESTs) by designing primers flanking single or multiple SSRs with three or more repeats.
To unravel the code the sugar beet blueprint is written in, we need what Mitch McGrath--a geneticist at the ARS Sugar Beet and Bean Research Unit at East Lansing, Michigan--calls an "alphabet soup" of genetic tools, such as ESTs (expressed sequence tags), BACs (bacterial artificial chromosomes), and RILs (recombinant inbred lines).
A paper by Yamamoto and Sasaki covers the Rice Genome Research Program's characterization of copy DNA clones (cDNAs) of expressed genes using expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and the application of cDNAs for construction of physical maps and cataloguing the rice genome.

That's very specific, and expensive, research." It recently yielded about 20,000 sugar beet gene indicator tags--ESTs(expressed sequence tags)--which represent some, but not all, of the 30,000 genes thought to make up the functional part of the genome.
Researchers in Miami will then work toward identifying the genes involved in disease resistance reactions, using sophisticated techniques called expressed sequence tags and microarray technology.
The aim of this study was to characterize a set of novel expressed sequence tags (EST)-derived microsatellites that have more conserved flanking regions so that some microsatellites can achieve cross-species amplification and good transferability in other related bivalve species (Bouck & Vision 2007).
