Trombiculiasis caused by chigger mites
Eutrombicula (Acari: Trombiculidae) in Peruvian alpacas.
Clothing impregnations of dibutylphthalate and permethrin as protectants against a chigger mite,
Eutrombicula hirsti (Acari: Trombiculidae).
Other parasites include mites ("chiggers,"
Eutrombicula splendens), keds (Lipotena mazamae), gnats (midges, Culicoides spp.) and chewing and sucking lice (Tricholipeurus lipeuroides, Solenopotes binipilosus).
Duration of attachment of the chigger,
Eutrombicula lipovskyana (Trombiculidae) in mite pockets of Yarrow's spiny lizard, Sceloporus jarrovii (Phrynosomatidae) from Arizona.
Infestacion y distribucion corporal de la nigua
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Acari: Trombiculidae) en el lacertilio de las rocas Sceloporus couchii (Sauria: Phrynosomatidae).
Trombiculidae represents one of the most widely distributed families in the Neotropical Region (Zippel et al., 1996, Daniel and Stekolnikov, 2004; Klukoswski, 2004), presenting interactions mainly of
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans, 1910) with a few other lizard species.
Two species of prostigmatic parasitic mites were found, Acomatacarus arizonensis (Leeuwenhoekiidae), and
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Trombiculidae).
All of the noninfectious chigger larvae can cause scrub itch or trombidiosis with the American chigger mite,
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi, being the most common culprit in the southern US.
Larvae of
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi Oudemans are generalist parasites of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and also humans (Daniel and Stekol'nikov, 2004).
-- The occurrence and levels of infestation by larvae of the chigger mite
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi on the desert lizards Uma exsul and Uta stejnegeri were studied on the sand dunes of Viesca, Coahuila, Mexico.
The species of arthropods were the following: Acari, Laelapidae: Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 1911), Androlaelaps rotundus (Fonseca, 1935), Gigantolaelaps wolffshoni (Oudemans, 1910), Laelaps echidninus Berlese, 1887, Laelaps manguinhosi Fonseca, 1935, Laelaps paulistanensis Fonseca, 1935; Macronyssidae: Ornithonyssus bacoti (Hirst, 1913); Ixodidae: Ixodes loricatus Neumann,1899; Trombiculidae:
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans, 1910).
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi is an ectoparasitic chigger mite of a large number of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals (Philips, 2000; de Carvalho et al., 2006; Lareschi, 2006; Paredes-Leon et al., 2006, 2008; Rubio and Simonetti, 2009).
