any of various usually large marine fish of the genera Epinephelus and Mycteroperca, found in tropical waters; they are often eaten by humans but sometimes contain ciguatoxin and can cause ciguatera.

Ellos agrupan los serranidos en tres subfamilias: Serraninae, Anthiinae y Epinephelinae. Esta ultima, para Chile, ha sido revisada por Rojas & Pequeno (1998).
La subfamilia Epinephelinae, incluye alrededor de 180 especies distribuidas en cuatro tribus (Epinephelini, Diploprionini, Liopropomi y Grammistini).
El objetivo de esta investigacion es complementar el estudio taxonomico y sistematico de la Familia Serranidae del Pacifico Suroriental de Chile, unificando antecedentes dispersos de las subfamilias Epinephelinae y Serraninae mediante una clave de reconocimiento especifica, asi como actualizar la informacion sobre sinonimias, distribucion y sobre la base del estudio de ejemplares, agregar nuevos caracteres morfometricos y meristicos que faciliten futuros reconocimientos especificos.
Se reconocen para Chile una especie de la Subfamilia Epinephelinae (Pseudogramma australis pasquensis Randall & Baldwin, 1997), mientras que Diplectrum conceptione (Valenciennes, 1828), Paralabrax humeralis (Valenciennes, 1828) y Serranus huascarii (Steindachner, 1900) constituyen los tres taxones reconocidos para la Subfamilia Serraninae.
