Elwes syndrome

Elwes syndrome

A compulsive disorder featuring the necessity to hoard wealth and to live in poverty and self-denial in order to increase the hoard. The syndrome, which is often gravely damaging to the quality of life of the sufferer and to the affection of his associates, involves love of money to a pathological degree while denying the miser the satisfactions normally associated with the expenditure of money. There is often distorted judgement amounting almost to delusional thinking. The cause remains obscure. The syndrome is named after the notorious miser John Elwes (1714–89)
