First-line oral agents include pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) to fix the bladder epithelial dysfunction at the root of interstitial cystitis (IC); antihistamines to counteract mast cell degranulation that may be responsible for IC symptoms; and antidepressants for their analgesic, antihistaminic, anticholinergic, sedative, and antidepressant effects.
Pentosan polysulfate (Elmiron) is the first drug that was approved for the treatment of IC.
Management of the bladder symptoms is not easy Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium), a drug that can increase the positive charge of the bladder wall, will relieve pain and other symptoms in about 60% of patients.
