childhood absence epilepsy type 2A subtype (OMIM:607681) of idiopathic generalised epilepsy variably accompanied by febrile convulsions, which is characterised by an onset at age 6–7 years, frequent absence seizures and bilateral, synchronous, symmetric 3-Hz spike waves on EEG. Tonic-clonic and myoclonic seizures develop during adolescence.
Defects of GABRG2, which encodes a subunit of a ligand-gated ionic channel that plays a key role in inhibiting neurotransmission, cause childhood absence epilepsy type 2.
