EAggEC isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, kanamycin, imipenem, ceftriaxone and ceftazidime; were resistant to ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim; and were variably susceptible to tetracycline and streptomycin (Table 2).
Results from this study indicated that 4% of all tested samples could be associated with food poisoning by one or more pathogenic bacteria, 0.8% for ETEC or EAggEC, 0.8 % for S.
coli isolates recovered from liver, lung and intestine of affected pigs were examined for presence of genes encoding various virulence factors associated with pathogroups such as EPEC (eae/bfpA), EAggEC (eagg), ETEC (elt/est) and STEC ([stx.sub.l]/[stx.sub.2]) by PCR.
Because primers for loci that unambiguously distinguish pathogenic from nonpathogenic EAggEC have not yet been determined (1), we did not address this group in this study.
