A yellow xanthophyll carotenoid, C40H56O2, that is found in yellow corn and in the leaves of many plants, in egg yolk, and in the retina, and that may help to prevent macular degeneration.

zeaxanthinA common carotenoid alcohol which is synthesised in plants (e.g., peppers, corn, spinach, broccoli, kiwifruit, garden peas and other vegetables), giving many their characteristic colour. Some population studies have suggested that high dietary consumption of zeaxanthin-rich foods lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration, especially in heavy smokers and those with a poor diet.
