a tube inserted through the tympanic membrane for drainage of the middle ear.

A tube, shaped so as to be retained in a hole, being narrower in the centre than at the ends. Tiny plastic grommets are used to secure and maintain drainage of the middle ear, through the eardrum, in cases of ‘glue ear’ (secretory OTITIS MEDIA).
