A fanciful descriptor for the marked acantholysis of basal cells of the epidermis, with scattered preserved intracellular bridges, seen in the overlying epithelium in biopsies from patients with benign familial chronic pemphigus or Hailey-Hailey disease, that may occasionally be seen in other acantholytic processes—e.g., pemphigus vulgaris
