Desulfotomaculum

(dē-sŭl'fō-tō-mak'yū-lŭm),
A genus of rod-shaped (straight or curved), anaerobic, chemoorganotrophic motile bacteria that stain gram-negative but have gram-positive cell walls. Found in soil, the rumen and elsewhere. The type species is Desulfotomaculum nigrificans.

Low G+C Gram positive bacteria contain Desulfotomaculum and Pelotomaculum and these two genera belong to Desulfotomaculum Cluster I that is usually recognized as sulfate-reducing bacteria and have habitually been observed in different anoxic habitats (Hristova et al., 2000; Plugge et al., 2002).
