DIO3

An intronless gene on chromosome 14q32 that encodes an iodothyronine deiodinase, which inactivates thyroid hormone by inner ring deiodination of the prohormone thyroxine (T4) to its inactive metabolite, 3,3’,5’-triiodothyronine (RT3), and that of the bioactive hormon 3,3’,5-triiodothyronine (T3) to 3,3’-diiodothyronine (T2). DIO3 is highly expressed in the pregnant uterus, placenta, and foetal and neonatal tissues, suggesting a central role in regulating thyroid hormone inactivation during early development.

In this process, Dio3 normally originates from the father's gene, while the maternal gene is silenced by epigenetic control.
"In light of our current finding, we can begin testing specific dietary supplements that could reverse the epigenetic alterations that disrupt the regulation of Dio3," Sittig said.
