DCTN2A gene on chromosome 12q13.3 that encodes dynactin-2 (a 50-kD subunit of dynactin), a macromolecular complex that binds to both microtubules and cytoplasmic dynein and effects an array of motor activities, including ER-to-Golgi transport, centripetal movement of lysosomes and endosomes, spindle formation, chromosome movement, nuclear positioning and axonogenesis. Dynactin-2 modulates cytoplasmic dynein binding to organelles, and plays a role in prometaphase chromosome alignment and spindle organisation during mitosis, anchoring microtubules to centrosomes. It may play a role in synapse formation during brain development.
