Variations between serum magnesium (and other electrolytes) in different times and between two study groups (open and closed heart surgery) was investigated and control for other predictors was performed by repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) models.

We compared frequency of hypocalcaemia between groups of open and closed heart surgery. In addition to high frequency of hypocalcaemia at the first hour after operation it was statistically significant among "on pump" group (P<0.001) but during the following days it was relatively equal among both groups.
We did not find a significant difference between open and closed heart surgery. However, complications in complex procedures were significantly higher.
Since its inception 23 years ago, over 980 patients have had lifesaving surgeries, including open and closed heart surgery.
Besides, 59 (29.2%) underwent closed heart surgery. Types of closed surgeries included 22 (37.28%) ductus arteriosus ligation; 13 (22%) modified Blalock-Taussig shunt; 12 (20.3%) PDA ligation + pulmonary artery banding; and 12 (20.3%) coarctation of Aorta repair +- PDA ligation.
We did not find a significant difference in complication rates between open and closed heart surgery, or in different age groups.
