MAX. A gene on chromosome 14q23 that encodes a member of the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper (bHLHZ) family of transcription factors, which form homo- and heterodimers with other family members—e.g., MAD, MXI1 and MYC. MYC-MAX upregulates transcription; MAD-MAX downregulates it.
