cilastatin

 [si″lah-stat´in]
an enzyme inhibitor used with imipenem to decrease the metabolism of imipenem in the kidneys and increase its concentration in the urine; administered as the sodium salt.

cilastatin

A drug used in combination with the beta-lactam antibiotic imipenem (carbapenem) to prevent its degradation in the kidneys so that its action can be prolonged. A brand name for the combination is Primaxin IV.

Eight hours after sepsis induction, when the animals showed clinical signals of sepsis (ruffled fur, hypothermia, lacrimation, lethargy), a combination of the antibiotics imipenem and cilastatin (8 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously to increase the survival rate.
