yeast artificial chromosome

n. Abbr. YAC
A large sequence of DNA that is artificially inserted into a yeast genome for replication or expression.

yeast artificial chromosome (YAC)

CLONING VECTOR based on YEAST chromosome, with a yeast TELOMERE at each end of the linear molecule, a CENTROMERE, a sequence for autonomous REPLICATION, allowing propagation in yeast, a selectable GENETIC MARKER for yeast and a POLYLINKER. YAC vectors typically accommodate DNA fragments up to 600kb in size. However, special types of vector can accept fragments up to 1400kb. The very high capacity of these vectors makes them useful for cloning large inserts in genome sequencing projects.
