Herbal medicineA deciduous tree or shrub, the bark of which contains a glycoside, phyllyrin and saponins; its bark is antipyretic, astringent, diuretic, laxative and tonic. It has been used internally to stimulate the appetite, gastric secretions and the flow of bile, and topically to treat wounds.
