physical dependenceSubstance abuse A physiologic state of neuro-adaptation to a specific opioid, characterized by a withdrawal syndrome if the drug is stopped or ↓ abruptly, or if an antagonist administered; PD may be relieved partly or completely by readministration of the substance.
