carbonic anhydrases

ENZYMEs that reversibly catalyse the breakdown of carbonic acid into carbon dioxide and water, thus allowing the easy transfer of carbon dioxide from the tissues to the atmosphere via the blood and the lungs. In the stomach a carbonic anhydrase frees hydrogen ions for the formation of hydrochloric acid; and in the pancreas they produce bicarbonate to neutralize duodenal acid from the stomach.
