A perennial herb, the root of which contains berberine. Coptis is antimicrobial, antipyretic and a general antidote, and is used for abscesses, alcohol and other intoxications, anginal pain, bloodshot eyes, diarrhoea, halitosis, haematuria, high fever, gastritis, heat stroke, hepatitis and jaundice.
